One thing that all human societies have in common is their need to explain where they come from.  Whether it is as a nation, like Rome’s Romulus and Remus, or as a pan-national collective, like the Norse Valhalla legends; whether it is based on “beliefs,” like the Judeo-Christian Seven Days of Creation, or empirical “facts,” like the Big Bang Model or the Human Genome Project, knowing who we are is interwoven with knowing how we got here.  Even tracing one’s family tree is, in fact, a micro level ontology.  We can’t help looking for explanations. El Gallo Chantecler, the Gestural Charms of Kamyl Bullaudy Rodríguez

A master of contemporary Cuban art, Bullaudy’s range of production is impressive, including charcoal murals, collages, paintings that incorporate coloured pulp made in a blender from discarded paper and egg cartons, and the lively run of roosters exhibited at Queen Gallery. One need not even consult the documentaries neither by Roberto Chile nor by Juder Laffita of the artist at work to sense the marvellous energy with which these pieces are executed.

Hugo is an accomplished designer, illustrator and imagineer: his work has been recognized by architectural and design firms across Toronto, his home for the past 29 years. First Films will be the debut of three short films by emerging Iranian filmmakers. They will be showing different layers of Iranian life; illustrating an artistic way of life, a typical, everyday life, and a life involved in politics. The Latin poet Horace famously stated that the purpose of poetry is to produce “delectare et prodesse,” to delight and enlighten the reader or listener. Yari Ostovany’s work can be seen as a pictorial translation of that dictum. While his paintings are instantaneously and effortlessly compelling, they do not yield themselves fully at first view. Their “meaning” is not accessible on the surface. They make their demands on the viewer. Demands of a philosophical as well as aesthetic order. Both intellectual and emotional demands of a high order.

Kathy Toth’s paintings are inspired by personal experiences she has had. While attending art school she learned that being messy and having drips was something one should aspire not to do, in that it showed sloppiness and carelessness. Stability and professionalism is represented with cleanliness, and staying within the lines as professional. In her involvement with street art, drips, streaks and whatnot were even more frowned upon.

Oscar Wolfman’s photography embodies a core Jewish technique to interpret sacred Jewish texts: midrash.  Midrash fills in the missing sections of the narratives, resolves contradictions, and imagines creative reconfigurations of Biblical texts.

In Oscar’s staged photographic interpretations, Jewish religious and cultural life incorporates queer sensibilities and a modern urban perspective.

This solo exhibition provokes rethinking, instigates discussion, and encourages the viewer to find new beauty in old traditions.
