- Afra Pourdad
Fine Art Photographer Afra’s dad first discovered her interest and talent in photography when he developed the photos of his zenit E camera surprised to find out photos by her when she was only eight. The driving force behind Afra’s photos has always been the hardships of her personal life. A young mother faced with the challenges of school, working and living in a patriarchal culture moves to Toronto from Iran. Afra then documents the lives of young immigrants in the transnational sphere marked by a digital life. Afra’s Photography is to capture the moments and feelings that shall not be forgotten, pleasant or unpleasant. She explores the fragments of life in these times of dissemination, of movement and moving. Afra holds an MA degree in food sciences and has taken photography studies at Sura Art University, Tehran, Ryerson University, Toronto as well as George brown College.
‘This is who I am’
The project is the story of the woman in me or perhaps any other Iranian woman with the same cultural background, life experience of growing up in Iran and a mind full of complex thoughts. Affected by her society, censorship dictated to her everyday life as she grew up. It’s the story of her struggle, her hopeful and hopeless times, her rise and her fall, her calm and her anger, the story of her inner struggle…. It’s the story of her black and white fights happening on a grey background… it’s her story…
